Autoclave Update

Does your practice use an autoclave? If so, do you use a biological indicator or spore test to verify the autoclave’s capability to achieve sterilization? And, if you perform spore testing, with what frequency is it done? The following information should trigger looking into your process and ensure compliance with your state guidelines.

The State of Indiana recently implemented a change in its requirement for autoclave testing using biological indicators (also known as spore testing). (note that this change is for Indiana facilities). Originally, Indiana required monthly spore testing for autoclaves. Effective in January 2008, that requirement changed. The change now requires a facility to ensure that it has run a biological indicator within 7 days of the current (about to be run) sterilization cycle or load.

Other States? The requirements will vary from state to state. The frequency for testing an autoclave with a biological indicator will range from weekly to monthly for a dental or medical practice setting. Check the April 2008 issue of the Advisor for the complete article on what should be done for your practice.
